Skype for Business Help

Legal Aid Ontario provides clinics with Skype for Business, an online meeting service.  The ACLCO uses Skype for Business for its meetings and has put together the information below to assist our meeting participants with attending these meetings.  Clinic staff can obtain technical help from LAO’s IT Service Desk at 416-979-2115 or 1-888 320-9888 or by email at helpdesk@lao.on.ca.  LAO provides online help for Skype for Business here. The ACLCO maintains this page as “information only” and does not guarantee the service.

What you will need to attend a Skype for Business meeting

  • Computer or other device.
  • Microphone & Headphones (mic may be in your webcam) OR a telephone (all meetings have a dial in option for audio)
  • Webcam (optional, but helpful.  You will still be able to see shared content, other webcams and participate in online chat features without a webcam.)

Click the link below to jump to the relevant instructions for you.

Meeting guests who DO NOT have a clinic login (ID)

  1. Open Internet Explorer on your computer (not Edge. Our experience is that it does not work well in Chrome, Firefox or other browsers at this time.)
  2. Copy and Paste the link from the meeting invitation marked “Try Skype Web App” (DO NOT just click on it to open.)
  3. Your web-browser may download a plugin or ask permission to change settings related to this meeting. Please say ‘yes’ or ‘run’ as needed.
  4. Enter your name and click Join Meeting when prompted
  5. You will be asked how you wish to connect audio:
    • To use your telephone to call in, select “Don’t Join Audio” and use the phone numbers listed in the meeting details in the invitation you were sent.
    • To use your computer (must have mic or webcam), select “Use Lync”. If you are using your computer for audio, please use headphones/ headset to help us improve audio quality in the meeting.
    • Do NOT use “Call me at” option.

Clinic and LAO staff

From the office (on the LAO-Clinic network)

  1. Ensure you are signed into Skype on your computer (for help with this, please see LAO IT’s help materials linked above)
  2. If you click on the Join Skype Meeting link in the meeting invite and the meeting does NOT open in Skype, copy and paste the link marked “Join Skype Meeting” into Internet Explorer or open the meeting from Skype (calendar icon).
  3. You may be prompted to select how you wish to join the audio:
    • To use your telephone to call in, select “Don’t Join Audio” and use the phone numbers in the meeting details above. (Desktop users without a mic or a webcam must select this option.)
    • To use your computer (must have mic or webcam), select “Use Lync”. If you are using your computer for audio, please use headphones/ headset to help us improve audio quality in the meeting.
    • Do NOT use “Call me at” option.
  4. Please reduce background noise as much as possible and/or mute yourself as needed.

Out of the office (ie. home/ mobile)

You can join Skype for Business meetings outside the office either on a clinic laptop or on a personal device (laptop, desktop, tablet, smartphone)

  1. Do NOT try to open the link inside Citrix.  It will not work.
  2. For clinic computers, ensure you are signed into Skype.  Copy the meeting link url into Internet Explorer and the meeting should automatically open Skype for you.
  3. For personal devices, there are 2 options:
    • Download and install the Skype for Business app (free).  LAO’s help documents linked above explain how to sign in.
    • For laptops/ desktops running Windows, use the instructions provided above for Meeting Guests without a Clinic ID and launch the meeting in Internet Explorer (not Edge).  Below the “Guest” name blank, you should see a link to “Sign in if you are from the organizer’s company”.  Click this and enter your username (format: clc\username – not your email address) and your password.
