Community Legal Clinics across Ontario hosted events on July 30, 2019 as part of the Day of Action! Hundreds of people took part in rallies, demonstrations, BBQ’s, attended open houses, pop-up legal advice clinics and more, lending their voice to #StopLegalAidCuts and ensure #Justice4All in Ontario. There was extensive media coverage of the 40+ events across the province, including TV and radio news, interviews, along with print and online articles. The message is clear: Premier Doug Ford and Attorney General Doug Downey need to reverse the cuts and restore legal aid funding in Ontario immediately.
The work is not done, however. There has already been an announcement of further cuts and the provincial government is set to do a ‘modernization’ review of legal aid services, including the legislative framework. This could put clinics at risk. We must continue to ensure that the fundamental principles of clinic law in Ontario continue to be in place for the future.
